You made your debut as a soloist with the Berlin Symphony in the great hall of the Berliner Philharmoniker at the age of 8. At what age did you start playing the cello?

-I started playing the cello when I was 5 years old. That might seem pretty early but in the classical music field, it’s rather normal to start that early.

Why the Cello?

-There is this story that I heard the cellist Mischa Maisky (a very famous cellist) on the radio and told my parents that I want to play exactly this instrument. I’m not sure if this is true but I do like the sound of the cello very much!

Do you play any other instrument? If the answer is affirmative, which one?

-Yes, like everyone who studies music in Germany I had to learn piano as well. But honestly, I’m not very good at it.

“It’s amazing to be able to play these compositions and knowing that I will never have enough time to hear all the music out there”.

What inspires you in your day-to-day life as a musician?

-I think first of all the incredibly beautiful music I’m playing every day. It’s amazing to be able to play these compositions and knowing that I will never have enough time to hear all the music out there.

But other than that I’m much inspired by other art like paintings, movies, or books. And I do listen a lot to other than classical music which inspires me too.

How would you describe the feeling when performing and performing in front of the public? Is there a connection between you and the cello?

-The feeling during a performance is hard to describe. I’m very excited and a little nervous sometimes before the concert but while I’m on stage it’s just a very intense feeling with the music. And yes, there is a kind of connection but above all the cello is just my tool to express the music the way I want it to.

Between a rainy day and a sunny day, which one would you prefer to play? and because?

-Indeed a tricky question and one I thought already a great deal about it! I think I prefer right now a sunny day just because the summer is coming and I’m missing the sun.

Do you have a favorite melody?

-No, I literally can’t answer this question. There is too much music which I love and it changes every day what I like the most. However I have maybe my favorite pieces to play and one would be the Kodály solo sonata which I just recently recorded and which is out on YouTube!

Have you always wanted to be a cellist?

-Basically yes. I did have from time to time other ideas like becoming a politician for example. But I actually always wanted to become a cellist.

Tell us about Quantum Clarinet Trio, you met when you were studying together at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, how has this experience been?

-The Quantum Clarinet Trio is the chamber music ensemble I’m playing in and it’s simply amazing to play with such gifted and wonderful musicians together. It’s quite difficult to find the right people to play with because you spent a lot of time together while working but I’m so happy that we found each other. It’s a perfect match musical wise and that’s very inspiring and motivating to work with.

A dream to fulfill within music?

-I would love to play concerts around the world for all kinds of people. far too often the musical world is still very elitist but I believe that music is there for everyone, regardless of where you’re born or who you are.

¿Siempre has querido ser violonchelista?
